ARCHIVING THE CITY IN FLUX
Location: Downtown Cairo
Scope: Research
Archiving the City in Flux examines new modes of informal urban interventions in public space that have emerged in Cairo since January 2011. During this time a breakdown of the security apparatus has led to a state of unprecedented fluidity in the city. These types of informal interventions range from the simple outdoor extension of shops into the side walk, peddlers taking over the street, roadside development alongside highways and the construction by local communities of exit ramps to access the ring road.
Archiving the City in Flux offers a preliminary account of the city as it evolved over the two-year period of 2011-2012, focusing primarily on public space and emerging urban orders such as residential areas and offers lessons learned from informal urban practices at its peak.
