STREET VENDORS INITIATIVE
Year: 2017
Street Vendors and the Contestation of Public Space documents a time of rapid political and urban change in Cairo, between 2011- 2015. It focuses on the issue of street vendors as an entry point to broader questions regarding who owns, controls, and uses public space. While this study may contribute to broader research questions concerning informal economies in Cairo and the right to the city, it focuses on the spatial manifestation of these practices. Based on a systematic documentation and analysis of the question of street vendors in downtown Cairo, it proposes potential design and policy recommendations.
