SCAVENGING JUNK, MAKING FURNITURE: UPCYCLING WORKSHOP
Location: Alfabrkia, Ard al-Liwa
Scope: Workshops
The objective of the first up-cycling workshop, “Scavenging Junk, Making Furniture,” was to engage artisans, introduce new applications of production, and experiment with functional designs while using waste materials in practical pieces of furniture. This second workshop in “cluster makes” series aimed at bringing students and young designers together with local craftsmen through an ongoing exchange of design ideas and new technology, on the one hand, and grounded practice and apprenticeship model, on the other.
The workshop comprised of three main stages: collection of materials from the local junkyard, designing a furniture item, and finally, building the piece. The participants were asked to present their built furniture pieces at the end of the workshop along with scaled drawings showing its details. This workshop was led by three instructors Silvia Burger, Karem Ibrahim and Jakob Lindfors, and supported by the British Council in Egypt.
