Australia is a country of 24 million people from a diverse range of backgrounds, yet the design community has a distinct lack of representation from the land’s first inhabitants. At present, it is estimated that there are only six to eight registered Indigenous architects in private practice, and only 20 have graduated from schools of architecture. That said, how has this culture—the oldest continuing living culture in the world—managed to impact the Australian built environment? What is the role of Indigenous design in contemporary Australia? How can we achieve greater recognition of these cultures? How can the lessons learned in Australia relate to other contexts around the globe?
