PERGOLA ARTS AND THEATRE
Location: Agouza, Giza
Client: British Council and Art Jameel
Scope: Design and Implementation
Pergola is a project designed and implemented by CLUSTER, in partnership with THISS Studio (London) and Orient Productions, with the support of Art Jameel and the British Council as part of “Anhar”: Culture and Climate Platform, under the auspices of Giza Governorate. The ten-meter-high red structure offers a dedicated space for performance and community use, introducing a bold cultural landmark to be viewed from the adjacent 6 October bridge amidst an urban landscape dominated by advertising billboards.
The design process involved a series of sessions to develop alternative ideas and concepts that were presented to local community members in the park, and later to authorities and other stakeholders to get their feedback.
The Pergola is designed to be adaptable. It adopts sustainability principles through the incorporation of recyclable materials, including shading elements from recycled plastic sheets by VeryNile; flanking walls built with innovative plastic bricks from Reblox; as well as recycled plastic flooring interlocks by TileGreen. Pergola is conceived as more than just a theatre — it is a platform for gathering, celebrating, and reclaiming public space. It revives the traditional bands in city parks and offers an opportunity to introduce arts and culture to neighborhood communities. The open-air free venue is envisioned to host concerts, screenings, and performances that reflect the diversity and energy of Cairo’s independent arts and cultural scene.
