AMMAN STAIRWAYS
Location: Amman, Jordan
Client: Columbia University
Scope: Mapping and Research
Amman is a city characterized by its distinct topography–hills and valleys– through which it has evolved along cascading/climbing urban development. A hilltop-slope-valley cross section may offer a topological condition to understand not only Amman’s urban evolution, but its social, economic and cultural fabric as well. This topographic section could be further abstracted into the stairway, as a paradigmatic urban typology of Amman’s urban and cultural landscapes. Serving as both path and destination, the stairways have become landmarks in traversing the history of the city, and are in constant dialogue with its ever-growing number and diversity of citizens. The Amman Stairways Mapping project offers an opportunity for curated itinerants and cultural trails, tactical interventions to promote accessible and inclusive public space, and future research and publications through collaborative efforts with the local art, architecture and urban communities in Amman.
