BASURAMA: URBAN SOLID WASTE
Location: Cairo, Egypt
Client: Spanish Embassy
Scope: Workshop
CLUSTER collaborated with the Spanish Collective Basurama and Elnamla Cultura Resources during the 2012 Ramadan period on an Urban Solid Waste workshop at the Townhouse Gallery. Local architects, urban artists and the zabaleen (traditional trash collecting community) explored the structural forms available in garbage, and their potential reuse towards an engagement within local Cairo communities. The main outcome was a dynamic fanous (Ramadan lantern), which was temporarily installed in public spaces within the local communities of Ard al-Liwa and Abdeen. These interventions activated public spaces while engaging the community, drawing attention to their ability to enact beneficial change on a public level using readily available resources, in particular the recycling of waste. The presence of the prototypes in the street temporarily transformed the urban landscape and actively engaged local residents, users and passersby in a critical spatial discourse between formal design interventions and informal modifications and adjustments.
